Agnes Jebet Ngetich is a famed Kenyan long-distance runner. She competes in the 5 km and 10 km Cross Country events. The gifted youngster is the Cross Country Women’s world mixed-gender record holder in both 10 km at 28:46 and 5 km at 14:13. With both records notably set in Valencia on 14 January 2024. Consequently, Agnes made history as the first woman to ever break the 29-minutes barrier in 10 km.
At the 2023 World Cross Country Championships in Bathurst in February, the Kenya sensation won bronze and gold for senior race and senior team respectively. In September 2023, Jebet broke the world 10 km women-only record in Brasov, Romania after clocking 29:24.
Jebet’s athletics role models include Kenyan established female athletes Hellen Obiri and Faith Kipyegon.

The Cross Country prodigy is the second born in a eight sibling family. Following the untimely passing on of her father, Jebet had to at times make sacrifices to help their mother raise her younger siblings.
She would at numerous occasions skip school to work so that the family would get a meal. Eventually, Agnes resulted to selling alcohol as well as burning and selling charcoal to make ends meet.

Early days
Agnes was enrolled at Kamwosor Junior Athletics Camp by a well wisher where she developed her athletics skills while still undergoing secondary school education.
In 2017, Agnes was enlisted at the Ikaika Sports Management and later introduced to Adidas Company. Meeting Adidas was a life changer for Jebet as the company not only sponsored her education but also that of her siblings besides constructing a permanent house for her family.
Youth and Junior levels
At just 16, Agnes competed at the 2017 U20 Kenya National Cross Country Championships finishing eighth. She would improve to fourth in the 2018 edition.
In her maiden professional competition at the 2018 U20 Africa Cross Country Championship in Algeria, Jebet finished fourth to help Kenya win the Team gold. The following year, she won the Kenya African U20 Trials 5000 m aged only 18.
Senior level
At the 2023 World Cross Country Championships held in February in Bathurst, she won gold for senior team and bronze in the senior race. This was after finishing third behind fellow Kenyan Beatrice Chebet and Ethiopian Tsigie Gebreselama who won gold and silver respectively. In September that year, Jebet broke the world 10 km women-only record after closing the line in 29:24.
On 14 January 2024, the Kenyan youngster set two world mixed-gender records. One in 10 km after finishing in 28.46, 22 seconds faster the previous record. The other was in 5 km at a time of 14:13, 6 seconds better than the previous.
At the 2024 World Athletics Cross Country Championships held in Belgrade in March, Ngetich finished fifth in the senior race. However, Kenya won the senior team gold.
