Gabby Thomas full name Gabrielle Lisa Thomas is a prominent American track and field sprinter. She specializes in 100 m and 200 m events. She was the gold medal winner in 200 m at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Moreover, Gabby was in the American women’s team which won gold in both 4X100 m and 4X400 m at the 2024 World Athletics Relays in Bahamas.

At the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships, Thomas was part of the U.S women’s 4X100 m team that won gold in a championship record time of 41.03 s. In addition, the American marvel earned the championships 200 m silver medal. Thomas comes from a five sibling family of Jennifer Randal (mother) and Desmond Thomas (father).

Her mother Jennifer is a professor at the University of Michigan. Furthermore, she is the president of the Center for Measurement Justice. She is a Ph.D. holder in Education Measurement from Emory University (2007), a Masters in Teaching and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology both from Duke University (1999 and 1995 respectively).

Collegiate

Thomas competed for Harvard from 2015 to 2018 across six athletics events winning a total of 22 conference titles. Subsequently, she set a number of records in both the university and Ivy League in 200 m, 100 m and indoor 60 m events. She made her national breakthrough at the 2018 NCAA Division I competitions. In October 2018, the athletics phenomenon signed for New Balance thence turning professional and abandoning her year 2019 collegiate eligibility.

Professional

At the 2021 U.S Olympic Trials, Gabby ran her then personal best of 21.61 s in 200 m. She consequently made history as the second-fastest woman ever in the event. Her first major competition was in the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics. She won the bronze medal in the 200 m clocking 21.87 s on 3 August 2021. Just three days later Thomas won her second Olympics medal with the U.S team in 4X100 m relays alongside Jenna Prandini, Javianne Oliver and Teahna Daniels. In March 2022, Gabby achieved the best ever outdoor season opening performance by a 200 m sprinter at the Texas Relays in Austin at a time of 21.69 s. Subsequently, won the 100 m race in 10.92 s.

At the 2023 USATF Championships in Eugene, she became the women’s 200 m U.S national Champion in personal best of 20.60 s on 9 July 2023. The following month at the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Thomas won silver in 200 m after clocking 21.81 s. She was joined on the podium by Jamaican Shericka Jackson (21.41 s) and fellow American Sha’Carri Richardson (21.92 s) who took gold and bronze respectively. Additionally, Gabby won her first ever gold medal when the U.S team won the championships 4X100 m relays. The relay team comprised of Sha’Carri Richardson, Twanisha Terry and Tamari Davis.

At the U.S Olympics Trials held in June 2024, Thomas won the 200 m race in 21.81 to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The following month she won again in 200 m in 21.82 s at the London Diamond League. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she won the 200 m finals clocking 21.83 s to claim the gold medal.
