Julien Alfred is a celebrated Saint Lucian sprinter who specializes in 60 m, 100 m and 200 m events. She was the 100 m gold medalist at the 2024 Paris Olympics in 10.72 s setting a new event national record. Consequently, she made history as the first athlete to ever win an Olympic gold medal for Saint Lucia. At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Saint Lucia sensation won silver in the 100 m.
Earlier in the year at the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships, Alfred was the gold medalist in the 60 m. Furthermore, she equaled the North American Indoor record in the event. Alfred went to Leon Hess Comprehensive Secondary School in Saint Lucia between 2013 to 2015. She then enrolled at St. Catherine High School in Jamaica in 2015 until 2018.
She later joined University of Texas in the USA for a bachelor’s degree in Youth and Community studies. At the University, Julien competed in track and field events for the Texas Longhorns.

Early stages: 2015-2018
Alfred’s talent in athletics was evident since she was young. In 2015, she won in the U15 Central American and Caribbean champion. She was voted the Junior Sportswoman of the Year for Saint Lucia in 2015 and 2017. Additionally, Julien was the 2017 Nassau 100 m Commonwealth Youth Games champion. The following year, she took silver in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games held in Buenos, Argentina.
Collegiate career: 2022-2023
In 2022, the Saint Lucia prodigy made an all-time best of 7.04 s in 60 m at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. Subsequently, at just 21 she placed among the top 30 fastest all-time fastest women. On 14 May, she ran a record 10.81 s to set a national record. Furthermore, she became the fastest ever female athlete from the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States.
On 25 February 2023, Alfred broken the collegiate record to become the first NCAA female athlete to run 60 m in under 7 seconds with a time of 6.97 s. This raised her to number eight on the world all-time ranking.
Over the 200m distance, she clocked 22.26 s to attain a second collegiate best and the fourth fastest all-time woman. In the 100 m event, she ran a time of 10.89 s at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial ahead of American Sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson.
Senior Career: 2023-present
At the Budapest 2023 World Athletics Championships finals Alfred placed fifth and fourth in the 100 m and 200 m respectively.
During the 2024 World Athletics I Indoor Championships held in Glasgow, she won gold in 60 m in a time of 6.98 s. This was Alfred’s and Saint Lucia’s first ever gold medal in the World Athletics indoor Championships. On 1 June, in the 100 m race at the Racers Grand Prix held in Kingston, she clocked 10.78 s her lifetime best time. She also set a new national record of 21.86 s in 200 m on 20 July 2024 at the London Diamond League.
On 3 August, at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the athletics prodigy crossed the line first in 10.72 s at the 100 m finals to win Saint Lucia’s first Olympics gold medal in history. Americans Sha’Carri Richardson with 10.87 s and Melissa Jefferson 10.92 s won silver and bronze respectively.
