Teacher
Upon completing his high school education, Tim briefly worked in the manufacturing before joining the National Guard. Among his dreams was to become a teacher just like his father. After earning his bachelors degree he worked as a teacher in China for a year. Walz then returned to America to work as a teacher and football coach in Alliance, Nebraska. It is here that he met his wife Gwen Whipple who was a fellow teacher and the two married in 1994. In 1996, they relocated to Mankato and worked as a geography teacher and coach at Mankato West High School.
Military Officer
Walz joined the Army National Guard in 1981 aged just 17 and served in the military for 24 years. He trained in heavy artillery and worked in disaster response. During his tenure in the U.S military, he served as a Nebraska Army National Guard as well as Minnesota Army National Guard. In response to the 9/11 attack, Walz was deployed to Europe for a period of six months as part of the Operation Enduring Freedom. During his time in the U.S military, he earned two Army Achievement Medals an Army Commendation Medal for his dedicated service. Tim retired from the military in 2005 in the rank of a major sergeant.
Politician
In 2006, Walz was elected a Member of the United States House of Representatives from Minnesota’s First district. This was after defeating Gil Gutknecht, a six-term Republican. He diligently served in the position for twelve years from 3 January 2007, subsequently being reelected five times until he resigned in 3 January 2019.
Moreover, during his tenure at the U.S House of Representatives, Walz served as a Ranking Member of the House Veteran’s Affairs Committee.
