Mary Moraa OGW is a middle-distance Kenyan athlete who specializes in 800 m. She specialized in the 400 m race earlier in her athletics career and was in late 2019 when she made the switch to 800 m.

She the world’s highest ranked in 800 m as of 2023. Moraa was the 800 m race Champion in the 2022 Diamond League.

Moreover, she as well holds the 400 m Kenyan record with 50.44 seconds.

Mary’s achievements in athletics have not gone unnoticed by the state. In 2022, she was awarded a Head of State Commendation (HSC) which would be upgraded to Order of the Grand Warrior (OGW) of Kenya in 2023.

Moraa is also an administration police officer in the Kenya National Police Service (NPS). She has served in the police service since 2021.

Moraa debuted on the international stage was in 2017 World U18 Championships in Nairobi. At the time she was only 17 years old and in her third year in Mogonga Mixed Secondary School. She won a silver medal in the 400 race with a personal best time of 53.31 seconds.

During the 2018 World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland, Mary finished fifth in the 400 m. The following year, Moraa won the U20 and Kenyan senior titles. Furthermore, she was fourth at the African Games in Rabat, Morocco. At the Doha World Championship, Mary went made it up to the semi finals. Her season best was 51.75 seconds.

After running her maiden 800 m race late in 2019, Mary changed to the distance in 2020. She was eliminated in the semi-finals at the delayed 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021. However, at the World Championships in July 2022 at Eugene, Mary won bronze and achieved a personal best of 1:56.71 as she finished third behind Athing Mu and Keely Hodgkinson who took Gold and Silver respectively. In August that year, she won the Diamond League 800 m finals in Zurich to consequently become the 2022 champion.

At the World Championships in August 2023 at Budapest, Mary won Gold ahead for Hodgkinson and Mu who took home Silver and Bronze respectively.
