Beatrice Chebet is a renowned Kenyan runner who specializes in long-distance races more specially the 5000 m and Cross Country events. She became the World Cross Country champion after clocking 14:13 over 5km road race in Barcelona on 31 December 2023 to set a women-only world record.

In the 2024 Paris Olympics Chebet was a double-gold winner in both 5000 m and 10000 m, getting in the history books for winning Kenya’s first Olympic gold medal in women’s 10000 m. She is the gold medal winner for the World Cross Country Championships’ women’s senior race in both 2023 and 2024. Additionally, she took silver in the 5000 m at the 2022 World Championships. She also became the Diamond League, Commonwealth and African champion in the same event. Moreover, she is the 2023 World Road Championships 5 km race gold medal winner.

At the under-20 level, Beatrice won gold in both 2018 World Junior and 2019 African Junior Championships titles in 5000 m. She also won gold the 2019 World Cross Country Championships’ women’s junior race.

Beatrice Chebet Career

Chebet’s development as a long-distance runner began at an early age. She would compete in 5000 m races while in primary school. In November 2016 at the age of 16, she enrolled into the Lemotit Athletics Club in pursuit to enhance her skills in athletics.

Junior level

She won her first national title in June 2018 in the U20s 5000 m event. The following month, Beatrice made history as the first Kenyan to win the World U20 Championships title in 5000 m. Furthermore, she broke a twelve-year long Ethiopian dominance for the event.

In the 2019 World Cross Country Champions held in Aarhus, Denmark, the women’s junior race was a close contest. Three athletes; Beatrice and Ethiopian duo of Tsigie Gebreselama and Alemitu stopped the clock in 20:50. Thanks to the photo finish footage review used to separate the trio, Chebet was declared the winner taking the gold medal. Later in the year the young sensation was at it again winning the Kenya U20 National Cross Country Championships.

Senior level

Kenyan sensation made incredible achievements in 2022. This was after winning three gold medals and one silver in 5000 m women’s senior race. Chebet clinched the gold medal for 5000 m race in the African Championships held in Saint Pierre, Mauritius in June 2022. In July 2022 came with Beatrice’s greatest achievement of the year at the World Championships held in Eugene. In a closely contested 5000 m race finish she clocked 14:46.75 to take the silver medal behind Gudaf Tsegay who won gold in 14:46.29. The following month during 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England, she won another gold medal for the 5000 m. That not enough she took her third gold of the year in the same event at the 2022 Diamond League.

In the 2023 World Cross Country Championships held in Bathurst, Australia Beatrice won gold medals in both women’s senior race and senior team. Notably in the senior race she cast off stiff competition from Ethiopian Tsigie Gebreselama and fellow Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich who won silver and bronze respectively. During the 2023 World Road Running Championships held in Riga, Latvia in October, Chebet won gold medal in the 5 km race. In March 2024 in Belgrade, Serbia, she successfully defended her World Cross Country title after winning gold medals for both race and team.

At the 2024 Olympics held in Paris, Chebet won gold medal in the 5000 m in 14:28.56 seconds. She was followed closely of fellow Kenya Faith Kipyegon (14:29.60) and Dutch Sifan Hassan (14:30.61) who claimed silver and bronze respectively. Three days later, the Beatrice produced another stunning performance to bag her second Olympic gold medal in Paris. This time it was in 10000 m in a time of 30:43.25 ahead of Italian Nadia Battocletti (30:43.35) and Dutch Sifan Hassan (30:44.12) who settled for silver and bronze respectively. Consequently, she made history as the first Kenyan to win an Olympics gold medal in women’s 10000 m.
