Kawira Mwangaza is a Kenyan politician, bishop and entrepreneur who is the current Meru County governor. She is one of the seven women elected to serve as governors in August 2022 general elections. Mwangaza is as well a staunch Christian and serves as a bishop at Baite Family Fellowship church in Meru.

The governor owns a vernacular television station called Baite Tv which is the first Kimeru television station. She as well runs a chain of hardware stores dotted across the Kenyan upper eastern region. Before joining active politics Hon. Kawira was the Chief Executive Officer of Mwangaza Distributors Limited from 2004 to 2008.

Early life

Looking an the governor’s achievements today, one can be forgiven to think that she grew up with a silver spoon in the mouth. However, her life is a tale of from grass to grace.

The politician comes from a humble background. She lost her father at a tender age and her mother had to single-handedly struggle to take care of the family. Kawira would do menial jobs in the neighborhood to help her mother raise her little siblings.

At some point Kawira had to drop out of school and work as a house-help for almost a year.

Education

The Meru County boss, attended CCM Ontulili Primary School from 1981 to 1988 when she sat for her KCPE examination. Regardless of her excellent performance she could not immediately transit to secondary school due to lack of funds to continue with her education. She moved to Marsabit where she worked as a house-help for one of her relatives for close to a year.

Thankfully the young Kawira eventually joined Moyale Girl’s Secondary School as part of the pioneer class. She did exemplary well in her KCSE exams emerging as the best candidate in the then Marsabit district with a mean grade of C+.

Mwangaza later in 2008 enrolled for a Bachelor’s degree in guidance and counselling at Kampala International University, Uganda. She graduated in 2011. While still doing her undergraduate in 2009, she took a Certificate course in Human Resource Management at Makerere University and completed inside the same year.

The governor is happily married to the love of her life Robert Murega Rimberia Baicu who is a musician.

Kawira is a mother of two, a son named Timothy Kinoti born in1998 and a younger daughter.

Kawira Mwangaza Political Career

Mwangaza first ventured into politics in 2013 when she vied for Buuri Constituency Parliamentary seat but failed. She however carried on with her desire and determination to positively impact the lives of the Meru community.

Between 2017 and 2022, she served as the Meru County women representative. At the twelfth parliament, Mwangaza was a member of the House Business Committee. She was also a member of the Departmental Committee on Communication, Information and Innovation.

During the 2022 general elections, Mwangaza weathered the strong wave of the UDA party in the Kenyan central region to clinch the Meru County gubernatorial seat as an independent candidate. She emerged triumphant over the most prominent political figures in the county including the then governor Kiraitu Murungi and senator Mithika Linturi. Consequently, Kawira became the first female governor in the county.

The governor has been vibrant in changing the lives of the less fortunate through her support programs. The most famous being “Okolea kaana ka Miiru” (Save the Meru child) initiative. She has been instrumental promoting education, social and economic empowerment as well as uplifting the welfare of the marginalized in the society.

Nonetheless, her job as the Meru governor has not been a walk in the park. Her firm stand has occasionally landed her in trouble with the Meru County MCAs and the so called “Meru political heavyweights” who have made attempts to impeach her twice only to have her saved by the Senate in December 2022 and November 2023.
