Isis Naija Gaston professionally known as Ice Spice is a celebrated American rapper. She is renowned for her exceptionally relaxed rapping style.

Gaston love for music developed while growing up in the Fordham Road, Bronx in New York City. The talented artist began her career in rap music in March 2021 when she released her debut song, Bully Freestyle produced by RiotUSA. She made her breakthrough in January 2023 following the release of her debut extended play, Like…? whose executive producer was RiotUSA. The EP lead single Munch (Feelin’ U) would soon appear on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-hip Songs and Bubbling Under Hot 100 charts.

Owing to her outstanding talent, she has won number of music awards. They include; BET Hip-hop Awards’ Best Breakthrough Hip-hop Artist 2023, MTV Video Music Awards’ Best New Artist 2023 and the Gold Derby Music Awards’ Best Rap/Hip-hop Album 2024.

She was as well nominated for the 2024 Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Best Rap Song, Best Pop Duo/ Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media categories.

The American superstar comes from a mixed ethnicity family. Her parents are Joseph Gaston (Father) and Charina Almanzar (Mother). Joseph is an American of African descent and was one time a underground rapper while Charina is a Dominican descent. Isis parents separated while she was two years old.

Naija is blessed to be the first-born in a five-sibling family. Her siblings are; Joey (brother) and sisters Jada, Jayden and Jazzy.

Early life

Growing up in Bronx, Gaston developed affection with hip-hop music. This was majorly due to her father’s love for rap. She would listen to rappers such as Jay-Z, 50 Cents, Lil’ Kim and Nicki Minaj among others. Naija would as well listen to hip-hop instrumentals, write rap music lyrics and rap them out loud.

Career start: 2021-2022

The female rap star began her music career in March 2021 when she released her debut song, Bully Freestyle, produced by RiotUSA.

Career breakthrough: 2022-present

In August 2022, she released Munch (Feelin’ U) together with its video, the lead single from her debut extended play, Like…?. It would in no time become viral following support from Drake who played the song on his Sirius XM radio station, Sound 42. Soon it made appearances on Bubbling Under Hot 100 and Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-hop Songs charts.

In September 2022, Ice Spice signed a record contract with 10K Projects and Capitol Records. The following month, she released a single titled Bikini Bottom.

On 20 January 2023, she dropped debut EP, Like…?. It included songs such as Munch (Feelin’ U) , Bikini Bottom and In Ha Mood. In February, she collaborated with Lil Tjay on the tribute song for rapper Gangsta Boo, in a single with the same name. The single became Ice Spice’s first song on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 82. She was featured in the PinkPantheress’s remix song Boy’s a Liar part 2 and its video. The song eventually summited at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, highest spot for either musicians then.

In April 2023 in collaboration Nicki Minaj, she released the Princess Diana remix. The song topped at number four on the Hot 100 to give Ice Spice her second top-10 hit on the chart. In May 2023, Karma, a remix of Taylor Swift featuring Ice Spice was released with its video being released on 27 May 2023. It summited at number two on the Hot 100 consequently making Ice Spice the musician with the most top-five singles in the Hot 100 in 2023.

In January 2024, Ice Spice released a single Think U the Shit (Fart) as lead single for her upcoming album Y2K slatted to be released in 2024.
