Tyla Laura Seethal known professionally as Tyla is a celebrated Grammy award-winning South African singer and songwriter. She gained national fame in 2019 at the age of 17 years, following the release of her debut single, Getting late featuring Kooldrink. The celebrated artist signed with the Epic Records in 2021.

The Johannesburg born star became famous worldwide in 2023 with the release of single Water. The song entered the top 10 in charts across sixteen countries which included the United States and the United Kingdom. It was as well the first song by a South African soloist in 55 years to enter the US Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, the song was awarded the inaugural Grammy Award for the Best African Music Performance in 2024.

Her greatest musical role models include Aaliyah, Rihanna, Drake, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Wizkid and Cassie.

The South African song bird is as well gained nominations for a Soul Train Music Award, a BRIT Award, a MOBO Award and two South African Music Awards.

Tyla’s dream is to become the first world’s pop star from Africa.

Early days

Tyla’s talent and love for music was evident since her days in Edenglen High School. She was the school’s head of culture in her final year in high school, 2019. While still in school she would post her songs in her social media account. She was consequently identified by her manager, Garth von Glehn who made arrangements for her to start record songs during her final year in high school.

Debut single and domestic success: 2019-21

Upon completing high school education late in 2019, she released her debut single Getting late featuring Kooldrink. This earned Tyla domestic success. The music video which was released later on in January 2021 heaped several million views on You Tube and was nominated for the Music Video of the Year in the 2022 South Africa Music Awards.

Recording contract and two more singles: 2021-22

In May 2021, Tyla signed a recording contract with Epic Records through a joint venture with Fax Records in the United States. She released two more singles, Overdue in October 2021 and To last in November 2022.

Worldwide breakthrough and debut album: 2023-present

Tyla’s first career chart placements on the Billboard Mainstream R&B/Hip-hop Airplay and Rhythmic Airplay chart came in 2023 following the release of her single Been Thinking. Her first public performance happened the same year during the Dolce & Gabbana afterparty at the Milan Fashion week.

Tyla was part of the Chris Brown’s Under the Influence Tour where she was the opening act. She released a single Girl Next Door, in May 2023 featuring Ayra Starr, a Nigerian singer. In July, same year, Tyla released the song Water which soon after hit top 10 in charts in the United Kingdom, United States, Australia and several other countries across the world. This made Tyla the first South African soloist in 55 years (after Hugh Masekela’s song Grazing in the Grass in 1968) and youngest ever South African to get into the United States Billboard Hot 100. Water music video released on 6 October 2023 hit a total of 3 million views on You Tube inside only three days and 54 million views within one month of its release.

On 30 November 2023, Tyla released three tracks; Truth or Dare, Butterflies and On and On as she announced the release of her debut studio album, Tyla 2024 in March 2024. In February 2024, at the prestigious 66th Annual Grammy Awards, she became first artist to win the inaugural Grammy Award for the Best African Music Performance with Water. She consequently became the youngest ever African artist to win a Grammy Award.
