Jamal Musiala is a German professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder or a winger. He plays for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich and the Germany national team. Nicknamed “Bambi” for his dribbling expertise, Jamal is rated as one of the best footballers in the world.

Though Musiala prefers to playing as a number ten, he has the versatility to not only play in both wings but in all positions in the midfield. He is an excellent dribbler who is confident with the ball and has the ability to play between the lines. His speed and physicality also gives him an upper hand in one-on-one situations and the ability to play in small pockets of space.

The young talent was eligible to play for Nigeria through his father. He has played for both Germany and England at youth level before committing to the German senior men’s national team in February 2021. He has represented Germany at senior level at the Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Early days: 2008-2019

Growing up in Fulda Jamal joined TSV Lehnerz academy in 2008 at a tender age of five years. While he was seven, his family relocated to England where he enrolled at the Southampton development program before transferring to the Chelsea academy in 2011 where he continued with his career formation until July 2019.

Bayern Munich: 2019-present

A 16 year old Jamal bid Chelsea goodbye to join Bungesliga giants Bayern Munich in July 2019. He made his professional debut nearly a year later on 3 June 2020 coming on from the bench in a Bayern Munich II 3.liga 3-2 win against PreuBen Munster. He then made his Bundesliga debut on 20 June against SC Freiburg to make history as the youngest Bayern Munich player (17 years and 115 days) to play in the Bungesliga. Musiala scored his debut Bundesliga goal on 18 September 2020 in a 8-0 victory against Schakle. He consequently made history again as the Bayern’s youngest goalscorer at 17 years and 205 days.

On 3 November, Jamal debuted in the Champions League when he substituted Bayern Legend Thomas Muller in their 6-2 win over RB Salzburg. He made his first Champions League start in a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid. His debut Champions League goal came on 23 February 2021 in a 4-1 away victory over Lazio. This made him set yet another record as the club’s youngest goalscorer in the Champions League with 17 years and 363 days. He also became the European competitions youngest goalscorer of both German and English nationalities.

Musiala signed his first professional contract with the Germany side on 5 March 2021 committing to the club until 2026. He continued with his fine form in the 2021-22 season. On 23 April 2022, his goal in a 3-1 win against Borussia Dortmund sealed the Germany giant’s tenth straight Bundesliga title.

That not enough, his 89th minute strike in a 2-1 victory over FC Koln on 27 May 2023 secured Bayern’s eleventh Bundesliga title in a row ahead of Borussia Dortmund on goal difference. Additionally, Jamal ended the season as Bayern’s second highest scorer with 12 goals.

Youth level

Musiala’s reason to choose England over Germany according to him was because he felt more at home in the English side. This is due to the reason that he grew up in England and was with a number of the team members in the Chelsea FC academy. He was first called into the England U21 side in November 2020 for their qualification matches for the 2021 UEFA European U21 Championship. On 13 November, he debuted from the bench in their 3-1 win over Andorra at Molineux Stadium and scored he first goal for the U21 team four days later in their 5-0 win against Albania in the same Stadium.

Senior level

Jamal announced on 24 February 2021 that he had made up his mind to represent Germany in the senior men’s national team. He was first called up to the side in March 2021 for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and debuted on 25 March as a late substitute in a 3-0 win over Iceland.

He was named in the UEFA Euro 2020 German squad on 19 May 2021. Four days later he played in a 2-2 draw with Hungary to become the youngest German player (18 years and 117 days) to be involved in a major tournament.

Musiala scored his debut senior international goal in a 4-0 World Cup qualification victory against North Macedonia. He consequently became the second youngest player (18 years and 227 days) to score for Germany national team behind Marius Hiller (17 years and 241 days) in 1910.

On 10 November 2022, he was named in the German squad for the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar. The German sensation debuted in the World Cup as one of the starting 11 against Japan. This made him the first German teenager to play in the tournament since 1958. He as well became the fourth youngest German to feature in the World Cup. Germany nonetheless took an early exit from the tournament after they were eliminated at the group stage.
